Conclusion of the First ABMACO’S National Recycling Program Report
IPT technicians visited manufacturers of mills and processors of composite materials; LORD also joined the program
The Brazilian Composite Materials Association (ABMACO) and the Institute for Technological Research (IPT) concluded the first ABMACO’S National Recycling Program report. The report summarizes the activities carried out since mid-February, when the project started.
As the first stage of the program focuses on the reuse of waste in the production process, from crushing and grinding – followed by researches on the inactivation of peroxides – IPT technicians started the work by visiting some of the manufacturers of mills. They also managed to visit companies specialized in processing composite materials in order to evaluate the characteristics of the waste arising from manufacturing processes. Such waste, after being tested in several types of mills, will guide the choice for the equipment to be acquired by the program.
"We are evolving significantly regarding the neutralization of waste", said Erika Bernardino, marketing manager of ABMACO.
In addition to the release of the first report, the other good news regarding ABMACO’s National Recycling Program was the recent entry of LORD, manufacturer of structural adhesives, in the group of investing companies – the program is a collective action, in the form of a consortium, and companies that are part of it will be able to commercially exploit the solutions developed.
Ashland, Comil, Composites Brasil, Cray Valley, Edra Equipamentos, Elekeiroz, Fiacbras, Marcopolo, Morquímica, MVC, Novapol, Owens Corning, Piatex, Poliresinas, Redelease, Reichhold, Royal Polímeros and Tecnofibras are also part of the project, which estimated period for implementation is twenty months. Meanwhile, the participating companies have the right to use the seal “I am a member of ABMACO’S National Recycling Program”. “Those who have the seal show to the market and society that they care about environmental issues and the promotion of sustainable growth”, says Erika.
According to the association, the Brazilian composites sector generates approximately 18,000 tons of waste every year, which represents an expense of R$ 120 million with the disposal at Class 2 landfills.

Established in 1981, the Brazilian Composite Materials Association (ABMACO) represents the entire production chain of composites or fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP), a material that has over 40,000 applications cataloged worldwide, from water storage tanks to pipes and aircraft and rocket parts. Presided by Gilmar Lima, General Director of MVC Plásticos, ABMACO has 252 members and holds, together with Institute for Technological Research (IPT), the Composites Technologic Center (CETECOM), the largest of its segment in Latin America.
