ABMACO will present a popular house made of composite materials at FEICON

Popular house made of composites: approval from CEF bank for the housing program “Minha Casa, Minha Vida”
Last November, when Gilmar Lima was reelected president of the Brazilian Composite Materials Association (ABMACO), he assured that people would be surprised with the participation of the entity at FEICON BATIMAT 2010 [International Construction Industry Trade Fair]. Approximately a month from the event – which takes place from April 06 to 10, in São Paulo – Lima is even more convinced that ABMACO will be able to attract the attention of visitors in the largest construction fair of Latin America. "We will use part of our space to present a house made of composites approved by Caixa Econômica Federal bank to be part of the Brazilian government’s housing program ‘Minha Casa, Minha Vida’”, he affirms.
With 37 m², the house will have walls made of composite sandwich panels (fiberglass reinforced polyester - FRP), polystyrene and polyurethane. "In addition to the increased resistance to fire and impact, these settings improve the residents' sensation of thermal and acoustic comfort”, explains the president of ABMACO. The panels are glued with structural adhesive, a renowned product worldwide in high performance applications, not only in civil construction but also in the automotive and aeronautics sectors. Composites will also replace wood or plywood traditionally used as materials for the doors. In addition, the synthetic marble is used in the kitchen, in the sink and laundry tub. “The synthetic marble accurately reproduces the colors of the natural stone, it is cheaper and avoids the proliferation of fungus”.
In the bathroom, instead of ceramic tile, a box-type floor made of FRP will be installed. “It's much more convenient, since it eliminates holes on slabs. Moreover, it keeps the brightness for much longer”, says Lima.
To enable the construction of the house, ABMACO gathered a pool of associated companies. MVC Plastics and Poloplast will build the panels, which raw materials will be provided by Elekeiroz and Reichhold (resin/gelcoat), Owens Corning (fiberglass), Lord (adhesive) and Purcom (PU). Ashland, Composites Brasil, Fibravit, LyondellBasell, Novapol, PAQ Tiles (ABMACO’s committee), Poli Resinas, Polinox and Royal Polímeros will be the sponsors.
Material used in the day-to-day life
In addition to the popular house, ABMACO will expose at FEICON several products that are part of our daily routine, but that we often don’t know that they are made of composite materials – water tanks, swimming pools and baths, for example. "We will also show the model of the winning project of the I ABMACO Architecture Award", says Erika Bernardino, marketing manager of the association. Developed by Sérgio Tempel, an architecture student from Escola da Cidade, the work – a house entirely made of composite materials, futuristic and environmentally friendly – will represent ABMACO at national and international contests on innovation.
During FEICON’s week, the association will organize the seminar “Composites applied to Civil Construction”. “It is scheduled to occur one day before the beginning of the fair and aims to show hundreds of possibilities offered by composites”, says Erika.
Civil construction leads the Brazilian consumption of composites. Last year, it represented 46% of 182,000 tons processed.

About ABMACO
Established in 1981, the Brazilian Composite Materials Association (ABMACO) represents the entire production chain of composites or fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP), a material that has over 40,000 applications cataloged worldwide, from water storage tanks to pipes and aircraft and rocket parts. Presided by Gilmar Lima, General Director of MVC Plásticos, ABMACO has 252 members and holds, together with Institute for Technological Research (IPT), the Composites Technologic Center (CETECOM), the largest of its segment in Latin America.
